What Kind of Identification is Acceptable to Show a Notary Public?

The notary public will need to see a current form of identification in order to notarize your documents. There are a few types of ID that are acceptable:

  • State driver’s license
  • State-issued ID card
  • United States military ID card
  • United States passport
  • Resident alien ID card

These are acceptable forms of identification no matter what state you’re in. There are other kinds of identification that your notary will NOT accept, including:

  • Social Security card
  • Birth certificate
  • School ID
