Altura Credit Union Members Approve Proposal to Convert
to a Federal Charter
(Riverside, Calif.) July 2, 2024 – Following a special meeting that took place on June 26, 2024, Altura Credit Union announced that its Board of Directors and Members voted to approve a proposal to convert from its existing California state charter to a federal charter. In terms of the next steps, Altura Credit Union will seek regulatory approval by submitting a formal charter conversion application to the National Credit Union Administration, which oversees federally chartered credit unions. Altura Credit Union estimates that the corresponding timeframe to obtain regulatory approval and complete the charter conversion process will be approximately six to nine months.
At present, Altura Credit Union’s field of membership covers those who live, work, worship, or attend school in Riverside County and certain cities in Orange County, San Bernardino County, and San Diego County. The conversion to a federal charter will not affect or change in any way, shape, or form, the status of Altura Credit Union’s existing members. Member deposits will continue to be insured by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund. Altura Credit Union will retain its name, and there will not be any corresponding staffing or personnel changes. The operations of Altura Credit Union’s existing 22 branch locations will also be unaffected, along with its website and online banking platform. Account/routing numbers, checkbooks, and services will also remain the same.
Following the conversion, Altura Credit Union will operate under a federal community charter that will cover both the metropolitan statistical area of Riverside County, California, and an associational bond. The conversion to a federal charter will allow Altura Credit Union to expand its membership eligibility, strengthen its ability to provide best-in-class financial products and services, and enhance its ongoing mission to ‘enrich lives and empower dreams.’
